Rain played spoil sport in the four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match between host Bengal and Orissa, which ended in a draw on the final day at Eden Gardens today. However, Bengal became richer by five points by virtue of taking first-inning lead, while settled with three.
The truncated match could start only in the third session on the second day and ended with many more interruptions due to rain. Put into bat by Orissa captain Shiv Sundar Das, Bengal made a competitive total of 301, thanks to a half-century each by captain Sourav Ganguly (81) and Charanjit Singh (72).
Among Orissa bowlers, pacer Ajay Barik and leg-spinner Shahid Ali Khan claimed three wickets each, while Robin Morris and Sanjay Satpathy picked up a brace each. In reply, Orissa folded up for 208 to concede a lead of 93 runs. P Jayachandra and Pravanjan Muullick hit a half-ton each for Orissa. When the match ended in draw, Bengal were seven for one in their second innings.
